Writing Prompt For English

For English the other day we had a writing prompt to describe a vivid dream, good or bad.  I wrote it in about 20 minutes so don't be too critical!  Here's what I came up with:

I stare at the summer dusk sky while sitting under my favorite tree. The sunset is gorgeous; this is my favorite time of day. Grass tickles my legs but the bark is harsh on my back. I have to push my hair out of my eyes again because of the warm breeze. The tree’s shade presses down on me, but a few drops of sunlight fight through, trying to shine even as the sun sets. I could sit here forever.

“Katharine!”

I break out of my trance and turn to my left to find the person who has called my name. I see my friends and smile. They are walking out of the Franklin and Marshall dining hall. Suddenly I am aware once again of where I am; summer camp.

My friends come and sit under the tree with me, laughing and continuing their dinner conversation. Ellie tosses me an apple she brought me from dinner. It’s a horrible throw. The apple lands by my feet; a crisp red apple against shaggy green grass. I pick it up and wipe the smooth skin with my shirt. The first bite is delicious; a kind of natural sweetness found only in perfectly ripe fruit. I thank Ellie for the apple and she laughs out something about division 1 softball.

I’m tired of sitting so I lie on the grass and watch the warm rainbow of clouds move ever so slowly across the sky. The air smells of fresh cut grass. I close my eyes and feel the summer.

I open them and suddenly I am speeding through a day, only catching glimpses of what’s happening; laughter, a blush, the smell of a freshly made grilled cheese, a run through the quad, a true friendship, a love of life and everything imaginable. They all flutter by me, grazing my cheeks and arms in their dance. They are each their own galaxy, innocent and free, spinning through their reality wearing smiles and happiness. My soul flutters from one to the next, never stopping but always observing, experiencing what the different galaxies are like. I reach for them and bring them to my heart, their love radiating through me as I am infused with warmth and bliss.

I wake up curled in crisp cotton sheets and under mountains of blankets. Everything is dressed in grays and blues. I look out the window next to my bed and see the road-stained snow of last week that refuses to melt. I sigh as I drag my legs out from under my covers and onto the carpet. I half expect to feel grass. I slide the rest of me out of bed and exhale dry winter air.

Someday I’ll breathe summer again.

The pictures above are pictures I took while at the summer camp I described in my dream. I sadly didn't take any of the sunset but I'll be sure to this year!
